Question for my readers

I will resume posting my introverted narrative next week, but for now I interrupt this series with a question for my readers. Do you know of any books/articles/interviews/resources that describe the talkativeness of the evangelical culture? It has been my experience that many evangelicals use five words when one would suffice, and as I work on my book I am looking for resources to help substantiate my experience. I am also looking for resources that discuss the spirituality of silence and solitude. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  1. I am curious about your approach. How are you relating words, evangelicals, and introversion. There are many more variables that could be influencing the dynamic.

I'd like to see you say more about how you are perceived by others. Are you perceived as an introvert? Or, do you put on the sheep's clothing of extroversion in your role as pastor?

The Quakers have a huge tradition of the spiritual value of silence.

  3. Thanks, Mark. You've come through for me as usual.

Hugh, at this point my approach is very undeveloped. My observation is that the evangelical world is very "chatty" and I'm working on a theory that some introverts would feel intimidated by that environment, not because they're antisocial but because talking can be wearying. And yes, there are always many more variables that can be factored in, but if we devote all our time to examining every single variable, then we'll end up never actually saying anything.

I'll think more about your other question.

  4. I like the chapter on solitude in Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster.
