If necessary, use words?

Okay, I just read a Christianity Today web article and it's got me stirred up. In the next few days I will post my response to it. For now, go here and read it. To pique your interest, the last three words are:

1. Use
2. Words
3. Always

Uh-huh.

  1. I am not sure I agree with this. Of course, I am a Church Musician, and an introvert who does not feel inadequate or guilty about being such. IMO, music speaks more to the heart and than ALL the eloquent sermons and theological treatises I have ever heard or read. Not that these aren't informative, instructional, and powerful, but there is a need to be quiet and listen. The language of music can serve to amplify and add to the power of the Gospel. Musical settings of scripture and hymns can challenge how we think about the gospel and, if carefully chosen (not just for taste), can move us beyond 'self' to a deeper experience with God.
