Adam, are you able to share where you took the course on spiritual direction? I am intrigued - I recognize the practice you described in your article; I've just never heard it labeled as "spiritual direction." Is this the same as prophecy?
ReplyDeleteJennifer - spiritual direction is not the same as prophecy. Actually, I'm not entirely sure what you mean by prophecy. The role of the spiritual director is not necessarily to have a "word" for the directee, but to ask questions, listen, allow for silence, and encourage self-reflection in the directee. It's a slow, contemplative process, and I absolutely love it.
ReplyDeleteI was certified by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles - most Catholic bodies have a spiritual direction program, and there are a growing number of Protestant training programs as well. It's usually a 2-3 year process.
